Downtown Portland: March 1982

It is a breezy, sunny March weekday in downtown when these pictures were taken along 5th and 6th Avenues.

The Portland Transit Mall (formerly just Portland Mall), completed in 1978, was a huge step in the revitalization of downtown. Originally spanning Burnside to Madison, it was extended North to Union Station in 1994 and South to PSU area in the early 2000s. The entire mall was redesigned to accommodate MAX and cars in 2007. During the rebuild, the curvy bronze-tinted glass shelters were removed (except for one). With their departure so too the last official vestiges of the original sector symbols for which I will never forgive TriMet.

Long live the sector system!

  1. Great pictures! Having arrived in Portland in 1987, these are very close to the Portland I started off getting to know way back then. It wasn’t until the early 90s that I started getting acquainted with TriMet (or Tri-Met as they still called themselves) I don’t suppose you still have your transit maps… ?
