Mystery Location: Solved! Portland Grocery, 1977

Update: Thanks to Michelle for helping solve this one. See below for links to entertaining hearing docs and further info!

Boy, someone out there has to know where this is. Great little neighborhood bodega somewhere in SE Portland, 1977. I am thinking Belmont, but don’t put too much weight on that. Chime in if you think you know!

  1. This looked so familiar I had to check.. I believe this is in SW, currently the Lair Hill Bistro, 2838 SW 1st.
    See: pg 176
Albert & Ester Schulhaus owned Slim’s Market (sign in front of your photo).
They objected to a new 7-11 store at SW 1st & Albert:

Finally, the current google maps photo looks to be the same house as their store/residence:,-122.6786927,3a,75y,283.87h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sP_t3IJQ5AQJpvPrWxnEZsg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xbe04dfb84dbb07d8!6m1!1e1

    • Oh my god Michelle, great work. I will post the “after” streetview of the side. The details of the hearing are fun to read. I wonder why they refer to 7-Eleven as a “Package Store” as if that was somehow different from any other sort of store. Probably antiquated legal jargon. Thanks for the links and being a winner!

  2. “Package store” is liquor selling lingo I remember from the OLCC (used elsewhere in the world too).. The neighborhood can’t put up quite such a fight anymore; I loved reading that though! I see in the Multco records that Ester sold the building in 1995.. I just couldn’t put this one down & am so happy to solve it!
