West End of Hawthorne Bridge 1980

Looks like a typical early spring-ish day back in 1980 when this photo was taken of the area just south of the western end of Hawthorne. Nothing here but a disused lot with weeds and advancing blackberry thicket. This area would soon development as a continuation of Waterfront Park. I love how there appears to be NO PARKING THIS BLOCK signs in the middle of the grass. Apparently this was a problem.

A pic from 1940 of this same area may be seen on VintagePortland’s blog

Pic was taken same day as this other one which shows a nascent Eastbank Esplanade.
